EASA Flight Instructor Training Course (FI(A))
Today’s aviation shows a significant gap between the requirements for a pilot license: the EASA minimums and the actual real requirements and demands of the profession. These are to safely fly and efficiently operate an aircraft in an airline environment.
- Theoretical instruction
125 hours
- Breifings, ground school
90 flight lessons
- Total flight lessons
30 hours flying
Starting date FI course
The minimum number of students required of a FI course is four. February 2024 we will start a new FI class. Depending on individual preferences, the course will take approximately four months.

General prerequisites and requirements for Flight Instructors (PART FCL.915)
- An applicant for an instructor certificate shall be at least 18 years of age.
- Additional requirements for instructors providing flight instruction in aircraft.
An applicant for or the holder of an instructor certificate with privileges to conduct flight instruction in an aircraft shall:- Hold at least the licence and, where relevant, the rating for which flight instruction is to be given;
- Flight instructors, have:
- Completed at least 15 hours of flight as a pilot on the class or type of aircraft on which flight instruction is to be given, of which a maximum of 7 hours may be in an FSTD representing the class or type of aircraft, if applicable; or
- Passed an assessment of competence for the relevant category of instructor on that class or type of aircraft;
- Be entitled to act as PIC on the aircraft during such flight instruction.
- Credit towards further ratings and for the purpose of revalidation:
- Applicants for further instructor certificates may be credited with the teaching, and learning skills already demonstrated for the instructor certificate held.
- Hours flown as an examiner during skill tests or proficiency checks shall be credited in full towards revalidation requirements for all instructor certificates held.
Specific Prerequisites for the flight instructor (PART FCL.915.FI)
An applicant for an FI(A) certificate shall:
- Have received at least 10 hours of instrument flight instruction on the appropriate aircraft category, of which not more than 5 hours may be instrument ground time in an FSTD.
- Have completed 20 hours of VFR cross-country flight on the appropriate aircraft category as PIC, and:
- Hold at least a CPL(A), or;
- Hold at least a PPL(A), and have:
- Met the requirements for CPL theoretical knowledge, except for an FI(A) providing training for the LAPL(A) only, and;
- Completed at least 200 hours of flight time on aeroplanes or TMGs, of which 150 hours as PIC;
- Have completed at least 30 hours on single-engine piston powered aeroplanes of which at least 5 hours shall have been completed during the 6 months preceding the pre-entry flight test set out in (e);
- Have completed a VFR cross-country flight as PIC, including a flight of at least 540 km (300 NM) in the course of which full stop landings at 2 different aerodromes shall be made.
- Applicants for the FI certificate shall have passed a specific pre-entry flight test with an qualified FI within the 6 months preceding the start of the course, to assess their ability to undertake the course. This pre-entry flight test shall be based on the proficiency check for class and type ratings as set out in this Part.
FI Training course (PART FCL.930)
Applicants for the FI(A) certificate shall have completed a course of theoretical knowledge and flight instruction at an approved training organization.
The course shall include
- At least 125 hours of theoretical instruction, including progress tests
- At least 30 hours of flight instruction of which 25 hours shall be dual instruction, of which 5 may be conducted in a FFS, an FNPTI or II or an FTD 2/3.
Pilots holding or having held an FI certificate on any other category of aircraft shall be credited towards the requirement of mentioned in FI training course above with;- 75 hours, in the case of aeroplanes, helicopters and airship
- 10 hours in the case of sailplanes and balloons.
ICAO (and EASA) defined Core Competencies to address all pilot licenses, and are therefore a useful starting point. However, they do not address the pilots’ profession as such, and therefore need to be complemented:
- For a successful airline pilot career, additional competencies are required, such as resilience, operational behaviour, and professionalism.
- In addition digital skills and profound knowledge and application of technology – which in today’s professional reality are essential.
Aim of the FI training course
The aim of the FI training course is to train aircraft license holders to the level of competence necessary for the issue of a FI(A) certificate on the subjects defined below:
- Prepare resources,
- Create a climate conducive to learning,
- Present knowledge,
- Integrate Threat and Error Management (TEM) and crew resource management,
- Manage time to achieve training objectives,
- Facilitate learning,
- Assess trainee performance,
- Monitor and review progress,
- Evaluate training sessions,
- Report outcome.
The training course should develop safety awareness throughout by teaching the knowledge, skills and attitudes relevant to the FI task including at least the following:
- Refresh the technical knowledge of the student instructor;
- Train the student instructor to teach the ground subjects and air exercises;
- Ensure that the student instructor’s flying is of a sufficiently high standard;
- Teach the student instructor the principles of basic instruction and to apply them at the PPL level.
