Which pilot's license?

There are two types of pilot licenses; the Private Pilot License (PPL) and for professional pilots the Commercial Pilot License (CPL). We advise people who have no ambitions to become a professional or airline pilot to obtain the PPL. Below you can find more about this.

What can you do with a pilot’s license?

Once you have a license you can fly wherever you want – whenever you want. Want to take a walk on the beach on Texel? Eating mussels in Middelburg? That’s just the beginning…

Outside the Netherlands, Europe has many hundreds of airports and airstrips; more or less next to every village or town you can land somewhere. Real gems. Fold out folding bikes and go on an adventure!

After a few hours you will already be flying above the Alps or the Norwegian fjords. You will come to places you have never heard of and you will experience a real authentic adventure.

Decide to have lunch on the Normandy coast on Saturday morning or go shopping in Sweden; with a pilot’s license you have unlimited personal freedom.

A PPL pilot’s license is the ‘passport’ to take to the air and is the start of a career in the air. The license can be supplemented with endorsements such as night flying, blind flying (IFR), or multi-engine aircraft. A PPL pilot’s license entitles the holder to fly on almost all types of aircraft, including (large) jets, provided that the holder also has additional training (type rating) on the aircraft in question. With the PPL license there may be no question of a compensation higher than cost sharing or of acting on behalf of third parties.

Can you Just Get in and fly somewhere?

Apart from a few standard checks (such as the weather, airspace and fuel) you can indeed decide ‘on the spot’ to go somewhere ‘just like that’. You can arrange registration with traffic control within a few minutes via an app on your phone. Nobody’s stopping you.

For whom?

Our student pilots are busy professionals, students, and people in general who have a life, never have time, are action-oriented and want to get results quickly.

Flying hours every year is a must, right?

Oddly enough, most people think that you, once you have a pilot’s license, every year make flight hours ‘must’. That is by no means the case. A pilot’s license is valid for life.

Flying is very expensive, isn’t it?

This is another myth that persists… Of course, like any other hobby, you can make it as expensive as you want (or your budget allows). The costs of flying regularly yourself are comparable to owning a mid-range car or cabin cruiser. You have two options: rent or buy. In both cases there are advantages and disadvantages. Our flight school offers its customers a Full Operational Lease through ‘fractional ownership’. If you have your own company, it is often possible to cover the costs for aircraft and training (partly or entirely) business activation.

You can do your entire flight training on your own aircraft and thus realize considerable cost savings. The entire management of your device can be taken care of by SKY academy, so that you no longer have to worry about it. Enjoy the pleasures and leave the burdens with us.

Is flight training ‘difficult’?

Contrary to popular belief, the theory does not involve mathematics and you do not need to have an academic background. A healthy brain, enthusiasm and some perseverance is all that is required. The question our students keep asking is: “Why didn’t I do this before?”.

Trial lesson

We are happy to offer you a trial lesson to get acquainted with our flying school and the flying lessons. The costs for the trial lesson are € 295.00 (all inclusive). If you decide to follow a course with us, this flight counts as a formal lesson for your course. Please feel free to contact us to further discuss the above if your interest is aroused. We would like to welcome you in advance to SKY academy!

How much time will this take me?

Our customers are mainly students and professionals who would like to get their pilot’s license in addition to busy work and private life. In all reasonableness it can be said that the flight training can in that case be completed between 4 and 6 months, depending on the time available for study and flying lessons in addition to daily activities.

Indication expected time effort for the entire course:

  • 130 hours of study for the theoretical subjects (mainly online self-study);
  • 70 hours of preparation for flying lessons (at home);
  • 30 half-days for flying lessons;
  • 3 half days for exams.

Quicker alternative for people in a hurry

If you want to get your license even faster, we can give you one Offer Accelerated Flight Training. In addition, you will receive your theory certificate within three weeks through an intensive full-time course.

We then invite you to France (during your holiday?) on a beautiful location to complete your practical lessons within 3 weeks. So you can get your pilot’s license from the campsite, but on request we can also arrange a temporary apartment with all amenities for you.

Am I 'stuck' on something?

The agreement can be terminated prematurely; you are not attached to anything. The costs never extend beyond the lessons that have been followed and the costs that we have paid for you in advance.

The training does not have to be paid in one go, but you can ‘pay as you go’.

What does the trajectory look like?

Getting a pilot’s license starts with theory; very easily through an online course and home study. In addition to following the theory, the flying lessons begin. The costs are usually paid in 4 parts as the training progresses. A flying lesson consists of:

  • preparations at home (about 2 hours);
  • pre-briefing (1 hour) – the instructor will carefully review the flight exercises with you;
  • preflight inspection (approximately 30 minutes) preparing the aircraft for flight;
  • flying lesson (average 1 hour);
  • debriefing (average 1 hour) – the instructor evaluates your performance.

When you are ready for the flight exam you will receive the ‘Course Completion Certificate’ and take your final exam practice with an examiner. After receiving your certificate you can start as a captain.

PPL and after?

After obtaining your pilot’s license, a world will open up for you and you can enjoy a freedom that ‘normal’ people cannot even imagine. The spectrum that ‘General Aviation’ has to offer you has many aspects. SKY academy can help you explore the huge variety of adventures and freedoms your certification has to offer.

The PPL also forms the basis for further training as a professional or airline pilot.
